reflection

When it comes to writing, the way I talk is how I write and that’s where I know I won’t get far in school if I continue to write the way I talk. I am trying to transform my writing skills into formal writing.  It’s actually weird because I love reading, but only if the book is interesting. Coming to college I never wrote a research paper before I was worried my paper wasn’t going to make sense. I know how to give good detail to a paper. When it comes to writing an intro and thesis it takes me a very long time just to have one. For the future I need to make sure I keep going to the writing center on a consistent basis. They helped me a lot throughout this semester, but doing my papers at the last minute would give me a not so good grade. I always got a grade that showed I put no effort into my work. This is not just for my English class also with my other classes as well. I though being able to have access to read my classmates blog was pretty cool. I learned new things I didn’t know. I read things that I new but got more information about it. Especially with reading “The Food Nation” everyone had their on perspective on that book. Reading “The Food Nation” I never knew about how McDonalds got started as well as Disney world. My confidence level on writing is very low. English throughout high school was one of my weakness right along with world history. While I am in LaGuardia Writing will always be required until I transfer to a fashion school. Going forward I feel as though I will get more comfortable in my writing. Moving on to my next my English class I hope I will be able to write better papers and I am more knowledgeable about writing researcher papers.  My major is Fashion merchandising, writing will not play I big part in my future. If it does I will be writing about things I already know when it comes to fashion.

Blog #11 (this is not done)

Unhealthy food is not the only issue an obese child will suffer from. There are all types of life- threatening consequences that a parent wouldn’t want to go through with their child, if they don’t change those bad habits. Type 2 diabetes is a consistent condition that affects the way your child's body metabolizes sugar. No parent should want to see their child have to stick a needle in themselves every day. This disease was classically seen in adults over the age of 40 but now is being diagnosed in obese children and teens. Metabolic syndrome isn't a disease itself, but a bundle of circumstances that can put your child at risk of developing heart disease, diabetes or other health problems. (By Mayo Clinic Staff 1)  “High blood pressure and high cholesterol, which are risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). In one study, 70% of obese children had at least one CVD risk factor, and 39% had two or more”. (J Pediatr 3). Your child can foster high blood pressure or high cholesterol if he or she continues to eat a poor diet. These factors can “contribute to the buildup of plaques in the arteries. These plaques can cause arteries to narrow and harden, which can lead to a heart attack or stroke later in life”. (By Mayo Clinic Staff 1) Extra weight on your child's body can cause issues with the maturity and health of your child's lungs, which leads to asthma or having other breathing problems. Another issue your child will have is trouble sleeping at night. Your child will have a condition in which your child may snore or have abnormal breathing when he or she sleeps. Make sure to pay attention to the breathing problems your child may have while he or she is sleeping.
Overweight children tend to have a social and emotional complication. Other kids very often tease or bully their overweight peers to the point they suffer a loss of self-esteem and an elevated risk of depression as a solution. Low self-esteem can create shattering feelings of hopelessness in some overweight children. When a child loses hope that their lives will develop, they may become depressed. A depressed child may lose interest in normal life. They sleep more during the day or hiding somewhere shedding tears. Some depressed children hide their sadness and appear emotionally reclining instead. Either way, depression can be serious in a child just as it would be in an adult. If you think your child is depressed, you should take some time to have a one on one so they know they’re not alone. Overweight children hold more anxiety and have poorer social skills than a kid that’s considered normal-weight. These problems may lead overweight children to step out and disrupt their classrooms.

After conducting a short research on childhood obesity, I feel it is wise to inform parents on how to prevent Childhood obesity, which can be stopped.  It doesn’t take high-tech treatments or cutting-edge medications to make it happen. It starts with a healthy diet. Say no to fast food and increase your child’s intake of fruits and vegetables. Instead of fountain sodas and sugary energy drinks, substitute them with fruit juices, seltzers and water. Parents with children under 6 should especially be aware of what they feed them. For those who believe it’s okay to eat fast food every day or often, should greatly cut down how often they do. Young people are consumed in consumerism everywhere with movies like Good burger or enticing McDonalds commercial’s on TV.
Parents should educate themselves and their children on the nature of the ingredients in those delicious chicken nuggets. It is important for people to understand how unhealthy and poor quality this type of food is. Parents should set boundaries when it comes to eating out. You should start off by not bringing fast food inside of your home. It’s okay if your child decides occasionally with their friends to get fast food, but its different from supporting them to go and eat fast food. If your child doesn’t learn from you who are the parents, they will end up learning habits from the fast food culture, food advertisements, etc. In an article I read called What Are the Benefits of Quitting Junk Food? “Quitting junk food can significantly reduce the total amount of calories you consume during the day. When you exclude junk food from your diet, there is room for nutrient-dense foods that will supply vitamins and minerals you need for good health. Having the right amount of key nutrients supports a healthy skeleton, heart, brain and digestive system as well as boosting you immune system”(2). A parent should never put restrictions on what their child should or shouldn’t eat because the child will go against what the parent says, as well as pressuring a child to eat something they don’t want to.
Eating breakfast is critically important to help jump start our metabolism first thing in the morning. It also prevents excessive hunger over eating later on in the day. Buying cereal that has at least 4 grams of fiber and saying whole wheat on the front of the box is the best thing to eat to start off your day. The parent should be 100% apart of their child’s progress to not being obese. Modeling is the natural way that children learn how to behave. The parent should set the best example for their child because your kids always look up to you, so if you’re not being active, your kid will think its ok not to be active. If you’re eating fast food all day, your child will think it’s okay to do the same. Exercising is another way to prevent your child from obesity. Instead of letting your kid watch TV all day on a Saturday morning, make them go outside to breathe in fresh air. A child’s body is really not deigned to run on a treadmill for 20 min like an adult.  But if they run around in the park they are bound to lose more weight doing physical activity than running on the treadmill. Neither making up some physical activity shouldn’t be hard at all but nor going overboard. Physical activity is not exercising.

 Topic:Childhood Obesity

 Hook:?
Definition: is a condition where excess body fat negatively affects a child's health or well being. As methods to determine body fat directly are difficult, the diagnosis of Obesity is often based on BMI (Body Mass Index). Due to the rising prevalence of obesity in children and its many adverse health effects it is being recognized as a serious public health concern.
Claim: How to help parents prevent their child becoming Obese

Body 1: What is obesity?
Supporting Information: Age- and sex-specific growth charts are used to calculate BMI in  children and teens (ages 2–20).  These charts use a child’s weight and height, then match the BMI to the corresponding BMI-for-age percentile for that age and sex. The percentile shows how a child’s weight compares to that of other children of the same age and gender. For example, a BMI-for-age percentile of 65 means the child’s weight is greater than that of 65 percent of other children of the same age and sex. Children and teens whose BMI-for-age is: In the 95th percentile or higher are considered obese. Between the 85th and less than the 95th percentile are considered overweight. Between the 5th and less than the 85th percentile are considered normal weight. Below the 5% are considered underweight.
Supporting details :  Understanding children obesity

Body2: How do you know if your child is obese
Supporting Information: You should always take your kids weight at all times. Their is a difference if you child is tall and just plain ol' over weight.

Revision

It is a parent responsibilities to control what they're eating. Obesity is a big thing for children and not enough active activities for these kids. Parents need to teach their kids from whats right to eat and whats not.
Food companies know there best targets to advertise to is mostly young  kids and teens. Food companies do all types of advertisement for these kids to keep them as a trusted clients .Younger kids would find ways just to get what they want from their guardians. they would make a scene if they dont get what they want. these kids would nag about food that isnt even healthy for you. In an article i read " Fast Food Companies Still target kids with Marketing for Unhealthy Products" by Megan Orcian. Orcian talks about why food companies advertise unhealthy for kids. Since food companies has been advertising unhealthy fast food and alot of parents started complaining about it. Kids started to become obese for there hieght and age. In, 2009 fast food resturants agreed to include healthy foods in advertising, targeting at children in order to combat the obesity epidemic in the U.S.
Before Mcdonalds and Burger king started selling healthy food there were kids already obese and there guardian obviously didnt care. Their burgers would be so greasy as well as their fries and than to top it of their sodas with all the sugar in the drinks would be ridiculious.  Children between the ages of 3&7 couldnt determine whether the sliced apples were fries or not. 81 percent recalled seeing french fries in the burger king ads, although neither ad featured fries. While 80 percent of kids mention

pastedGraphic.pdfThe one brand item that you will see constantly in my purse is always a pack of gum, Orbit gum to be exact. That brand of gum is an addiction and the best thing about it is all the flavors last long. Everyone that always sees me chewing gum always knows that I have gum and would ask for one. Strawberry remix, spearmint and winter mint are my favorite flavor that I would buy. I buy Orbit gum for three reasons. The first reason is after i finish eating a meal having a stick of orbit saves you especially if you had some garlic or onions in your meal. Also having gum is good if your in class. The action of chewing gum will help your metabolism. Chewing Orbit gum, the mint flavors is also good while your working out, extra motion of the jaw helps to create a rhythm that drives your motivation and enhances your workout session. It's a way to keep from snacking throughout the day, and becomes a simple habit.

Another food brand i like is baby food pouches. Even though they are made for babies/toddlers I still buy them for myself. It is the perfect on-the-go snack and is a on-the-go nourishment.  When I want a quick healthy snack Its perfect quick meal. These pouches are filled with fruits and vegetables. which makes you energetic, vitamin-fueled, and moving frantically from one thing to the next. The food pouches are good for me because I don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables in the day. Their are a lot of vegetable that I don't like but when they are mixed with fruits that I like I would buy it and the best part about it is you don't even taste the vegetables its like the fruit overpowers the taste of vegetable.

What interested me the most so far in Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser is in chapter2. Schlosser viewed Ray Kroc and Walt Disney’s weird bumpy relationship as well as each man’s rise to fame as well as the intricate profitable methods of advertising to children.
Both Kroc and Disney were born in Illinois a year apart, they both dropped out of high school, they severed together in World War 1, they moved to southern California after the war. Years later they both found ways to market their products to kids. Before Kroc involved himself with McDonald’s he had variety of careers, like in 1954 he was selling milk-shake mixers and the McDonald brothers needed eight. He convinced the brothers to sell him the right to franchise McDonald’s. They agreed and once that happen Kroc sent a letter to Disney asking if there would be any room for McDonald’s in Disney’s new park. It never worked out. Disney wanted to rise up the Fries so they would be able to get a profit off of it and Kroc disagreed.  Disney quickly developed clever and efficient marketing strategies like creating an atmosphere in which visitors felt as though they had escaped the real world, procuring corporate sponsorship, as well as coining the synergy strategy. Ray Kroc also worked on his own marketing strategies. He was more word of mouth, until Ronald McDonald was discovered by bozo the clown. Later on Ronald began to rival Mickey in name recognition.
In the 80’s marketing strategies aiming for children became a big thing. Marketing to children aimed at urging kids starting at the age of 2 to persuade their guardians to come in McDonald’s and now McDonald have gained new customers by that kid bringing in their grandparents or parents.. The marketing extends well beyond television ad campaigns and now includes play land, toys and cross promotion. McDonald’s has gone as far as to promote itself as a “Trusted Friend,” because their care about their customers well-being. I remember when I was younger and my mother always through my birthday party at McDonald’s for 3 years straight. To me it was heaven because they would give you toys when you bought a meal and then they would have all of McDonald’s characters come out and sing happy birthday to me. We would sing and dance and then we would go play in there play land inside of McDonald’s. Once I got older McDonald’s stopped that. Now certain McDonald’s has the play land. It was paradise to me, you got to eat, got a free toy and go and play in play land. Now any kid that sees McDonald’s they want it and really find ways to make it happen. McDonald’s to me is the the most convent fast food place especially when you’re on a highway and you see that big M standing tall.
Ray Kroc and Walt Disney did a good job on ways to market their band to kids. Especially the both have characters to brand their company that kids will always recognize where ever they are.
